December 2024

03rd December - 7.45pm

Members' Evening.

Our challenge for Tue 3rd Dec is 9 Images in 45 Minutes.

RULES FOR 9 IN 45

  • Decide where to walk (Tip: you want a variety of scenes on you rote otherwise a range of images may not be available).
  • The challenge involves 45 minutes of walking time and up to 18 minutes in total for capturing 9 images (no more than 2 minutes composition time for each image).
  • Select a starting point for your walk but do not take a photograph at this point.
  • Walk for 5 minutes and take your first photograph from where you stand.
  • Spend no more than two minutes selecting, composing and shooting the one image then walk on for five minutes to the next location.
  • Only take one image at each location.
  • Repeat the “walk 5 minutes and take an image within 2 minutes” cycle until you have 9 images.
  • Do not delete or retake any images (your file numbers should be consecutive!).
  • Images can be taken in colour or black & white.
  • Photographs should essentially be straight from camera.  Any post processing should be minimal – levelling, tweaking and minor cropping are permitted.
  • Photographs should not be heavily processed or put through filter styles.
  • Selfies are not eligible for inclusion in the 9 in 45 Challenge.

9 in 45 is an exercise in creating unlikely images from random situations.  Images that in other circumstances you may not consider photographing.  With the discipline of first shot only, in a fixed period of time, the resulting photographs are likely to be more intuitive.  Some images will work better than others.  The fun is in the taking, learning and in the review of the images captured.  You may be surprised by which locations provide the most interesting shots.

9 in 45 is designed to challenge photographers to work creatively outside their normal way of thinking and working.

In 9 in 45, good and less good photographs are equally valid.  There are no rubbish shots. To dismiss a photograph as rubbish is to discard what can be learnt from it. When viewed as a set, the gallery of 9 images may offer some interesting insights for the photographer and also provide ideas, inspiration and learning.

The rules of 9 in 45 impose strict guidelines for the photographer to follow.  During the 45 minutes of walking time, the photographer will find the process asks many questions about their photography.  The places they find themselves taking photographs are likely to be somewhere they may never normally consider taking a picture.  The random location and requirement to take a photograph within two minutes whilst staying on the spot  instantly presents a challenge of light, subject, composition, exposure and other environmental matters which may need to be overcome.

Images should be numbered in the order that they were taken.
